H.E.A.T. Programs
H.E.A.T.'s peer educators present programs for residence halls, student groups, sororities, fraternities, even academic courses. H.E.A.T. regularly offers the following programs. To schedule a program or for more information, email Meghan.Scott@eku.edu, Health Educator, or call 622-6221.
Alcohol 101
Our most requested program, Alcohol 101 gives students the information they need to make low-risk choices about alcohol. H.E.A.T. peer educators explain blood alcohol concentration (BAC) and it's effect on the body, standard drink sizes, laws regarding intoxication, alcohol poisoning and what to do in an emergency.
Sex and Chocolate
This is one of H.E.A.T.'s most popular sessions for guys and girls alike! H.E.A.T. peer educators come ready to answer any and all questions about sex. Students brave enough to ask a question get free chocolate. This program usually covers physical and emotional information about human sexuality.
Training for Intervention Proceedures (T.I.P.S.)
TIPS is a responsible beverage server training to help restaurant owners and their employees know the risks involved with serving alcohol. This program includes a certification exam for all participants. The program is only available through a certified trainer.
Safe is Sexy
H.E.A.T.'s STI/STD program provides information about sexually transmitted infections most prevalent in the college population. H.E.A.T. peer educators discuss transmission, protection, symptoms, and treatment. The program includes information about HIV/AIDS.
Tobacco Awareness
Tobacco Awareness educates students about the consequences of smoking and chewing. H.E.A.T. peer educators also offer the Cooper/Clayton Smoking Cessation Program which helps students, faculty, and staff become non-smokers. Financial Assistance is available for students who participate in the Cooper/Clayton Program.
Hookah
The hookah is a practice that has been gaining popularity among college-aged students in recent years. H.E.A.T peer educators bust myths about smoking the hookah while offering educational information about the consequences of doing so. H.E.A.T. peer educators educate students so that they can make more informed decisions.
Drugs 101
H.E.A.T.'s Drugs 101 program offers the latest up-to-date information on commonly-abused drugs to help students make more informed and safer choices. Students learn about the side effects of each drug classification and the effects of mixing each one with alcoholic beverages as well as with other drugs. The H.E.A.T peer educators discuss stimulants, depressants, prescription drugs, and date rape drugs, among others.
Cancer Awareness
H.E.A.T offers students up-to-date information about various forms of cancer. Students are given self-examination cards with prevention and treatment information.
Healthy Relationships
The Healthy Relationships program outlines the positive and negative behaviors associated with dating relationships. Healthy Relationships shares recent research about college relationships. Students have the opportunity to ask questions and share stories.
Sexual Abuse, Sexual Assault, and Rape
H.E.A.T teams up with the men's group, M.A.R.S (Men Advocating Against Rape and Sexual Assault), to provide information to students about these sensitive issues. This program offers valid information and provides resources for anyone wishing to get more information and/or seek professional help.
Stress Management
This is a great program to schedule for late in the semester. H.E.A.T. peer educators explain the physiology and causes of stress and share healthy ways to handle it. Participants will actively deal with their stress during the program.
Nutrition
H.E.A.T.'s Nutrition program provides information so that students can make wise choices. H.E.A.T. peer educators present information relevant to students eating at the cafeteria or cooking for themselves for the first time.
Self-Esteem
H.E.A.T. peer educators share information about self-esteem and ways to improve self-esteem. They also look at what might cause self-esteem issues and how to address these issues.
Body Image and Eating Disorders
Body Image and Eating Disorders commonly go hand in hand. These two programs can be offered together or separately. Both focus on positive and negative self-perceptions and how to handle them. Resources are available for additional information and/or professional help.
Depression
Depression is a common topic avoided by the college-aged population and rarely discussed among our peers, despite its devastating effects. H.E.A.T peer educators discuss signs and symptoms of depression and how to get help for yourself, a friend, or a family member.
