There are a variety of private medical doctors in Richmond that students

Charges incurred for these services are the student’s responsibility. |
MEDICAL INSURANCE
As of 2005, the University will no longer offer a single, specific Health
Insurance Plan. Instead, it hopes to provide students and their families
with information on how to choose a good health insurance policy from a
reputable and dependable company, and will provide helpful web based resources
and contact information. The University would like to offer its students
and their families as much freedom of choice as is possible in tailoring
the policy/plan to their specific needs and financial situation. Please
look for mailings on this subject through the summer and review the section "New Changes: Student Health Insurance" on this website. |
MEDICAL
RECORDS
Medical records are strictly confidential, and are not released to anyone
without the student’s knowledge and signed authorization. |
CLASS EXCUSES
Being excused from classes is an academic decision, and students need
to communicate directly with their instructors. A statement will be given
by the physician for the following reasons:
1. Admission to an observation bed at the SHS.
2. Referral for hospitalization or specialty care.
3. Referral home for medical care.
4. At the discretion of the physician, i.e. PE restrictions, job restrictions,
etc. |
STUDENT
HEALTH ADVISORY COMMITTEE
SHAC is standing sub-committee of the Council on Student Affairs. The primary
function of the committee is to confer with the director of the SHS on the
strengths and weaknesses of services provided at the SHS. Anyone with concerns
dealing with the SHS can contact this committee by calling 622-1761. |
ELIGIBILITY FOR SERVICES
All students enrolled in classes at Eastern Kentucky University are eligible
to use Student Health Services for their health care. All students pay a
student activity fee which entitles them to use most services at Student
Health Services at no additional cost.
Students who have graduated and have a record on file may visit Student
Health Services within 30 days of graduation in order to arrange for continuation
of care and transfer of necessary medical records.
Change of Student Status
A student who withdraws from school, is suspended or expelled, is no longer
considered to be eligible for services at Student Health Services. If the student has
a record on file, he/she may visit Student Health Services within 30 days
of leaving the university in order to arrange for continuation of care
and transfer of necessary medical records.
Minors
By Kentucky law, students under 18 years of age cannot be treated at Student
Health Services without parental consent, except in true emergencies. So
that underage students requiring medical attention for routine problems are not inconvenienced, parents
are advised to write a general letter of consent for treatment at Student
Health Service. Students should bring this letter of consent to Student
Health Services the first time they seek medical care. A parental
approval form is also available on line.
Summer Eligibility
Student Health Services is available for health care during the summer
to any student enrolled in summer classes.
Student Health Services is available for use by EKU students not registered
for classes in the summer months if they were registered in the spring
semester and are pre-registered for the fall. This arrangement allows
continuity of care for students during the summer months. Continuing students
not enrolled during the summer do not pay the student activity fee, and
may be charged $10 per office visit at Student Health Services. This
charge will be placed on the student’s university account.
New students may utilize Student Health Services at no additional charge
up to thirty days prior to the first day of classes if they become ill
or are injured while on campus for a University sponsored event or conference.

COST OF SERVICES
There is no cost for student visits to the Student Health Services except as outlined in the section on Summer Eligibility. Medical
services provided outside the facility, i.e., laboratory tests, x-rays,
prescriptions, physical therapy, consultations, ambulance service, emergency
room visit, hospitalization, etc., do generate charges, for which the student
is responsible.
The Health Services does not process insurance forms nor provide itemized
billing. |
